Joseph Arthur’s “In the Sun”

“I picture you in the sun wondering what went wrong
And falling down on your knees asking for sympathy
And being caught in between all you wish for and all you seen
And trying to find anything you can feel that you can believe in

“May God’s love be with you
Always
May God’s love be with you

“I know i would apologize if i could see your eyes
‘Cause when you showed me myself i became someone else
But i was caught in between all you wish for and all you need
I picture you fast asleep
A nightmare comes
You can’t keep awake

“May God’s love be with you
Always
May God’s love be with you

“‘Cause if i find
If i find my own way
How much will i find
If i find
If i find my own way
How much will i find
You

“I don’t know anymore
What it’s for
I’m not even sure
If there is anyone who is in the sun
Will you help me to understand
‘Cause i been caught in between all I wish for and all I need
Maybe you’re not even sure what it’s for
Any more than me

“May God’s love be with you
Always
May God’s love be with you”

This song has been everywhere for me lately, “Bourne Identity”, an episode of Scrubs, and I am sure I have heard it before in other places before I was even cognizant of it.  One of those songs you seem to have always known and listened to that puts you in sweet rhythms making you yearn for the next lyric and chord to soothe and comfort you — a song that you wish would never end.  However, as with all things in life, the song does end and one just hopes to find solace after the end.

Valuing Education

I just finished reading Generation X.  It was an interesting read.  I think the best was the last two pages of the book where Dag has an encounter with a bird.  The book also includes a chapter of “Numbers” which includes a stat that in 1990 the % of US budget spent on the elderly was 30%, while only 2% of the budget was spent on education.  I knew Americans didn’t value education, but 2% seems much lower than I anticipated.  Though perhaps I should have expected this with the 2% cap that teachers have on annual raises.

Wafa Sultan on Al Jazeera television

Here is a powerful and amazing statement on Al Jazeera television.
The woman is Wafa Sultan, an Arab-American
psychologist from Los Angeles.
I would suggest watching it ASAP because I don't know how long the link will be active.

America’s favorite pass time

What is it about food that’s so good? Greg and I been on a popcorn kick lately. Stir-crazy popcorn maker has made a way into our home and hearts several times a week. And I wonder who made up all these crazy suggestions on what constitutes a serving size. Everything is roughly 100 -150 calories a serving size because no consumer wants to buy anything higher. Problem is when a I … uh, I mean a consumer, eat 6 servings of fruit or something. Wow … suddenly I’ve got 480 calories of food in me in a matter of 10 minutes. And that’s just snack #1. — I think it’s time I pay attention to weight watchers or something because I am well on my way to being overboard on this food thing.

In the still of the night …

I look forward to the peace and quiet.  I look forward to the stillness.  I hope that I can turn off all the thoughts that prevent me from relaxing.  I look forward to stretching out and resting my head on a soft pillow.  I feel as if I have been “running to stand still” and now I have stopped running to lay still.

Weapons of Math Instruction

At New York’s Kennedy airport today, an individual later discovered to be a public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a setsquare, a slide rule, and a calculator. At a morning press conference, Attorney general John Ashcroft said he believes the man is a member of the notorious al-gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

“Al-gebra is a fearsome cult,”, Ashcroft said. “They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute value. They use secret code names like “x” and “y” and refer to themselves as “unknowns”, but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country.

“As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, there are 3 sides to every triangle,” Ashcroft declared.

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, “If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes.

“I am gratified that our government has given us a sine that it is intent on protracting us from these math-dogs who are willing to disintegrate us with calculus disregard. Murky statisticians love to inflict plane on every sphere of influence,” the President said, adding: “Under the circumferences, we must differentiate their root, make our point, and draw the line.”

President Bush warned, “These weapons of math instruction have the potential to decimal everything in their math on a scalene never before seen unless we become exponents of a Higher Power and begin to factor-in random facts of vertex.”

Attorney General Ashcroft said, “As our Great Leader would say, read my ellipse. Here is one principle he is uncertainty of: though they continue to multiply, their days are numbered as the hypotenuse tightens around their necks.”

3rd time a charm ?

Today, I was saved again during another car accident.  My family jokes about how many car accidents that I am involved in.  This makes my third one in about seven years.  A minivan cut me off on 96-W and I swerved through 3 lanes trying to avoid getting hit.  In the process I ended up doing a 360 that took me off the highway onto the right shoulder of the freeway.  God kept me safe from any major collisions that included a semi very close to me.  I wonder why I need to keep having so many car accidents in my life.  What is God trying to teach me, His Providence ?

hunger

One evening an old Cherokee Indian told his grandson about a “battle” that goes on inside people. He said, “My son, the battle is between 2 “wolves” inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
